Self Myofascial Release: Not nearly as kinky and fun as it sounds…

But you still gotta do it. One website offers a very comprehensive description on what myofascial release is: “a technique that provides sustained pressure into myofascial restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.”
Think of the fascial system (our connective tissue) as the knitted yarn that holds our bones, muscles, nerves, arteries, veins, and internal organs together. It is all connected form head to toe, so when physical trauma (a la Fran), inflammation (ditto), or scarring occur, the afflicted area becomes tight and pulls on the rest of the “yarn” in your body. These areas become dense, thick, and knotted. Imagine prolonged damage to those connective tissues without proper therapy. Translated into caveman CrossFit: Self Myofascial Release (SMR)=a better Fran time.
This website shows an great overview and intro to SMR. Do your best not to giggle at the cartoon people foam rolling. A word to the wise. This is not your happy pampering massage like sensation. SMR can be quite uncomfortable, so dig in and suck it up, buttercup! Just think of the impact this will have on your performance. Start with the foam rollers and work your way up to rolling with a lacrosse ball, which may be as fun as a root canal, but costs $2.99 at your local sports shop and beats paying for daily massages.
