Don’t let plateaus get you down
posted by: ruth

CrossFit Ocean City posted a great article about working past plateaus. Everyone hits them now and again. A beginning CrossFitter who PRs continuously for a good few months before getting to that day where he not only does not PR, but may not even reach his previous max! In fact, he may even hit an entire week where his times and max lifts are below average! His first instinct may be to pout, swear, stomp, cry, or fall off the nutrition wagon. In fact, I recently added over 50 seconds to my Fran time and proceeded to pout, swear, stomp, cry (you get the picture), but Steve’s article talks about how to channel that frustration into productive work:
- Re-evaluate Diet: Are you Zone, Paleo, or Paleo-Zone? Take that extra step to honing in on what your body needs for performance. Do you need to up your fat intake? Are you taking fish oil?
- Set New Goals: pick a lift, set a new PR goal. Pick a gymnastic movement you want to attain or perfect, be it the muscle up, HSPU, L-sit pull up, etc.
- Pick a Goat: Kill it (metaphorically, folks).
- Rest: Most of the time, a bad week is just your body telling you to lay off. Pre-CrossFit, I could get by on 4-5 hours of sleep a night, but now 7 hours is hardly adequate. Aim for 8-9 hours. Prioritize getting your sleep daily as much as you do getting your WOD in.
