As promised, I wanted to post about your local farmer’s markets and what we can find there. A recent visit to the Torrance Farmer’s market last Saturday yielded lots of goodies: grass-fed bison from Lindner Bison, raw milk from Organic Pastures, and free range eggs from La Bahn Ranch. Also available are a host of seasonal, locally grown fruits and vegetables.

One of the problems they addressed in the movie Food, Inc. was the decline of seasonal produce. We now have the technology to grow tomatoes year-round, ship them green from across the world, and “ripen” them in a process using ethylene gas. Buying seasonal, locally grown produce will eliminate the problem of environmental damage caused by shipping foods thousands of miles, your food dollar goes directly to the farmer, and your family will be able to enjoy the health benefits of eating fresh, unprocessed fruits and vegetables. Win-win? Absolutely.

Also, many places listed on Local Harvest.Org deliver a variety box of organic produce that you can customize online every week! Love Delivery is one such place. It may seem a bit pricey, but browse, put together a custom box, and compare with a shopping cart at Whole Foods. With all these options, the only complaint I have is the cost of eating healthy. However, it is up to us to put the demand in the market for high quality foods. Just like Scott said, we as consumers have a duty to change the market.

We’ll be taking a trip to the Torrance farmer’s market this Saturday after the WOD. Anyone who is free to join us is welcome!

Great post Ruth! Thanks for the info. It sucks that healthy food is so expensive, but our health is worth every penny.

It kills me that there are so many people out there living paycheck to paycheck, counting every dollar, who can’t afford to buy good healthy food. Hopefully, if more of us buy fresh organic food and put market pressure on large companies like Walmart to get into the game, the large volume will reduce costs and allow every to have access to truly healthy food.

Just wanted to say thanks to Ruth and Marcus for pushing me during the WOD. Mental Note: Don’t eat less than two hours prior to working out. I felt like dying.
