The Golden Years: Why We Squat and Deadlift
posted by: ruth

Ever think about the Golden Years? Marcus’ post yesterday got me thinking about the future. The far future. I’ll bet when you CrossFitters picture yourselves old and gray the questions that run through your mind will NOT be “Can I get up from a chair? Can I pick up my grandchildren?”
Instead, you guys will be wondering, “How much can I deadlift? Will I still have a 2x BW back squat? Will I be able to out WOD my whippersnapper grandson?”
Why do we squat? To become a strrrrrrrrong MFer. Duh. BUT, we also squat to train our muscles to support a load. For some people, their very own body weight IS the load. Sitting down and getting up becomes a WOD in itself and sometimes, merely getting up without the use of any aids is a PR.
Why do we deadlift? Same answer as above. We also deadlift to safely pick up loads from the ground. This load can range from a 400# barbell, to heavy luggage, to a fallen comrade (for those in the LEO/Fire/Mil fields), to an SUV that trapped a baby, to a little grandchild.
We, as CrossFitters, have devoted our lives and lifestyles to keeping our bodies in finely tuned athletic condition so that when we enter those golden years, we do so with MF-ing Badass Grace. Can’t wait to see the Blue Hair Special WOD here at CFI in 50 years!

I thought we Squat and Deadlift because Ruth told us we have to??
I’m going for max total reps on Tabata today. No gaming it so I can make a number in every round.
BTW, what does Deadlift 5 mean? 5 lbs? 5 Jassims? 5 Ruths? I think you guys are just throwing out another numbering scheme to keep me confused!!

LOL, Scott.
DL 5 = work up to a 5 rep max. Add 5# to last week’s lift. Basically the same thing, but all the sets leading up to it are now warm up sets so that you save the energy for one big 5 rep lift.
Nice job on them Power Cleans yesterday.
