In the Arena

Shauna, a trainer at CF Coronado, will be competing today! Good Luck Shauna!!!
Today is the first day of the So Cal Sectionals and we have a couple of friends who are amongst the brave and dedicated athletes competing. Shauna, from CrossFit Coronado, is a passionate coach who is also a kick ass gymnast. We wish we could be there cheering for you Shauna!
I remember last year’s Regionals and how incredibly nervous I was the week leading up to it. Al Viquez, a trainer at CrossFit , sent us the most touching, inspiring pep email and I want to share it with you guys.
“I remembered a post I read a few months back on CrossFit Watertown’s blog and I wanted to share an extremely relevant quote from it as you wrap up your preparation for the qualifiers this weekend. It reads:
“It is not the critic who counts: not the man who points out how the strong man stumbles or where the doer of deeds could have done better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face is marred by dust and sweat and blood, who strives valiantly, who errs and comes up short again and again, because there is no effort without error or shortcoming, but who knows the great enthusiasms, the great devotions, who spends himself for a worthy cause; who, at the best, knows, in the end, the triumph of high achievement, and who, at the worst, if he fails, at least he fails while daring greatly, so that his place shall never be with those cold and timid souls who knew neither victory nor defeat.”

I’m sharing this quote hoping that it will give you peace of mind. The WODs will be physically demanding but, regardless of the outcome, you have already won. You win simply by stepping up. We’re all extremely proud of you so go out there and enjoy the moment.
I’ll close with one more quote that I took from that post. It’s supposedly a common saying in triathlon circles but can be applied to this weekend and all future athletic pursuits:
“DFL beats DNF beats DNS = Dead F***ing Last beats Did Not Finish beats Did Not Start.”

Thank you so much for the kind words Ruth and everyone at Crossfit Intrepid. It’s funny that you put that quote on–for sure one of my favorites and something I had to memorize as a freshman in college. That quote truly represents the attitude that I want to have at any competition! I won’t actually compete until March 27th at the San Diego/Arizona Sectionals–but I will be thinking of you guys and all these great posts and advice I’ve gotten from Crossfit Intrepid: I’m really excited!

LOL, Shauna! Sorry for the mixup! I guess we’ll just have to post this one again in a few weeks! I wish I could come cheer you on, but I guess I’ll just have to wait until Regionals!!
