The Grand Central Market has been in operation in the heart of downtown Los Angeles since 1917. If you find yourself in the area, you owe it to yourself to check out this historic open air market. There are a few different inexpensive fruit and vegetable vendors to choose from as well as several other international booths to visit.

Recently, when I had to report for jury duty, I ventured over to the Market for lunch. I remembered visiting the market back in my pre-Paleo days and eating burritos, but I was up for the challenge of adapting the offerings to a more Primal-friendly meal. When I stopped by one of the Mexican food booths, they had the option of buying the various meats by the pound. I asked for a half-pound of carnitas and hoped for the best. As you can see below, they gave me quite the spread of lettuce, salsa, onions and cilantro along with limes all for under five bucks! I stopped by one of the fruit vendors for an apple to pair with the almonds I brought to complete out my meal. Just keep in mind that while it may be challenging, it is often possible to piece together a healthy meal with a little ingenuity!
