Since it’s that time of year again for hay fever sufferers, Mark Sisson posted an article about foods to avoid if you suffer from allergies this time of year.

He starts by listing foods to avoid, primarily any foods with histamines:

  • Alcohol: This time wine tops the list as a no-no. They contain sulfites as well as histamines that come from the fermentation process.
  • Other fermented foods: aged cheese, pickles, and sauerkraut.
  • Yeast products: bread (duh), grapes and ciders.

What’s left to eat?

  • Anti-inflammatory foods such has fish, nuts, veggies (like tomatoes and eggplant), fruit, raw milk, and fish oil are popular choices. If you’re eating paleo/primal, these staples should have already been part of your diet.
  • Mark also lists green or white tea to the list as an inflammation reducer as well as an immune booster.
  • Vitamin C and quercetin are potent natural antihistamines.  An extra dose of magnesium can help alleviate wheezing symptoms.
  • Buy some wild raw local honey.  He says that “Because bees pick up the pollen of their environment, the resulting honey can offer something of a therapeutic dose for gradual desensitization – much like an allergy shot. It’s important to start small (1/4 teaspoon daily – max) and work your way up to gradually build tolerance.”
  • Last, but definitely not least, cutting out all grains will help with any autoimmune connections between gluten/anti-nutrients and hypersensitivity to grass seeds and pollen.  Remember, grains = grass seeds, the very thing your body may be allergic to!

Jake, thanks for posting times!

Speaking of sneezes, I caught a cold over here and have been loading up on Sudafed and some strange drug that a nice Korean doctor (?) gave me on our tour…. Wish me luck!
