“Train Like You Play”

“Train like you play” is quote all too familiar to those who have played high school or college sports. It’s a statement, a philosophy even, often used in football, basketball, and other sports to remind athletes about the importance of intensity and focus while preparing for competition. My coaches used to bark this at us when we were lagging in practice or just going through the motions. It helped us to keep the goal in mind during the tedious practices leading up to a game. This mantra of intensity and focus extended into the weight room, class room, and even out on the town with friends. They encouraged us to understand that our actions should never detract from the goal, whether on or off the field.
I’m stoked that a number of you are interested in competing in the CrossFit Coronado Intermediate Competition on Aug 21st. I encourage you to approach each WOD like you’re at a competition, with a judge eyeing the quality of your each and every movement. Imagine stiff competition right next to you, who you can see out of the corner of your eye, pushing you to dig a little bit deeper and not drop the bar and rest or risk losing ground. Push yourself now, in your workouts leading up to the competition, because when competition day arrives the last thing you want to have going through your head is the nagging feeling of how you wish you had been a little more serious with your training or had pushed yourself a little more…because at that point it will be too late to do much about it. If you push yourself hard now you’ll be aware of your limits, weaknesses, and strengths as an athlete and you’ll be able to plan your strategy for the competition workouts and truly test your limits in the arena. Tweek your diet now so your body has time to readjust before Aug 21st. Remember to train like you play, and the rest will take care of itself.
