Monday Check-In
Categories: Challenges, Nutrition

So who is going to man (or woman) up and state they’re on-board with this month’s challenge? Please post to comments so we know you’re committing to staying the course.
Those of you that are on the challenge, how did your first weekend go? What did you find most difficult? Who has the most burpees to pay off today? Don’t forget we expect those on the challenge to keep a food log of everything you eat. The purpose of this is three-fold: you get to take personal account of what you eat, you have accountability towards the challenge and lastly, we trainers can help you with possible pitfalls in your meal planning.
The most common question people have is “why so strict??” Keep in mind, this is only a 30-day challenge that ideally you would do with ZERO cheats. The reason why is so you can completely eliminate all the possible negative foods you’re eating and find out which have the worst effects. For every time you decide to cheat with sugar, you lose some of the insulin sensitivity you’ve been working so hard to gain back via the paleo diet. Worse yet, if you cheat with gluten, it can stay in your system for upwards of 3 weeks! Now you can probably see why we assigned so many more burpees to a cheat involving gluten.
None of us are saying that to eat paleo means to never eat ice cream or drink a beer ever again. However, for this challenge, you should do your utmost to eliminate these items so you can find out if any of them are holding you back. As the challenge winds to a close, I’ll go over how to approach adding any of these items back into your diet to test your tolerance.
With that in mind, you can make your time eating paleo easier by not trying to shoehorn a crappy diet into primal clothing. While there are a slew of recipes out there from paleo-friendly ingredients to make versions of cookies, pancakes, etc., you’d do best to avoid these for now. This is mainly because these items are paleo in name only, since you are typically still processing the primal ingredients to make the recipes. The end result is that these items end up very high in energy content and may prevent you from eating the foods you should be eating. One really needs to view these as treats that can be had after the challenge if you decide to stay on a primal diet in lieu of an actual “cheat”.
Along the same lines, everyone needs to avoid any sweeteners. They all produce insulin spikes and cause a loss in insulin sensitivity. In addition, they will intensify any sweet tooth you have, making your life that much harder. By any sweeteners, I mean even the ones that try to sound healthy: cane juice, raw sugar, maple syrup, agave syrup, coconut sugar, stevia, etc. See my older post for more information on this.

I know Jenna is determined to win this challenge… I’m rooting for her all the way. Zero burpees so far!
Brian and I are in for spectating the NLP. Were we going to buy a set of guest passes like Mike mentioned last week?

Michelle and I are also in for spectating at NLP Saturday. How many spectators do we have? Any participants have free guest passes that are not yet spoken for?

Funny no one answered the question posed by Marcus.
Marcus i am OUT… i apologize to the R.A.M.S for disappointing them in so many ways, but i am a weak weak man. I did contemplate it for a brief moment, then succumed to the siren song of Uncle Bills Pancake House and consumed what would probably equate to 4000 burpees. Again i apologize for such terrible will power, and i will do my best to NOT sabotage any participants with my blasphemy.

Jenna is using my freebie. Cost doubles at the door so be sure everyone gets together beforehand and buys them online.
Marcus, I am in but with slightly less conviction than my GF. I had my coffee with just milk this morning and it was awful. I did notice that my sugar withdrawls are less each day and the whipped cream we make each night for the fruit tastes sweeter as the days without sugar pass.
I was drinking one zero cal Vwater each day before and now that is in the rear view mirror as well, regular water actually taste better.
I am noticing changes but I will be real honest in saying I have a 30th birthday party on the 29th in San Francisco, and I do see a couple cocktails taking place on the evening of August 14th but rest assured, they will be “no sugar added” cranberry juice, and not much of it!!

I’m going to have to say I’m out
I’m going to use my upcoming bachelor party as my excuse.
There’s no way I’m going to remain
sober for the 5 days I’m out there. But to be a sport, I will do a burpee a day when I wake up

“sober for the 5 days” LOL. I can’t imagine NOT being sober for 5 days!
I’m in! Been semi in for a few weeks, save for an occasional cheat day. But no cheating for 30 days. Yay!
Is anyone else volunteering at NLP? Carpool?

I’m with Becky… I will definitely do the best I can to be healthier, but a paleo month doesn’t bode well with me. After this weekend in NY, i’d owe close to 400-500 burpeees (soley because the alcohol consumption). good luck to those who are participating! I’m proud of yoU!
