Next Level Wrap Up
posted by: ruth
A job well done for all in the Next Level Invitational! The final standings were posted and everyone did incredibly well. I think each of us walked away proud of our performances, but also proud that we stepped into the ring to test our mettle. Most importantly though, we walked away with the knowledge of exactly what we need to work on. My lack of love for running necessitated my “pacing” the 200m sprint in order to not be too winded for the subsequent movements.
And while I don’t anticipate that we’ll be doing multitudes of pullovers in the near future, you better believe we’ll be spending more time on gymnastics skills. It should be noted that across the board, our competitors did very well on all the strength movements (Cleans, Squats, Deadlifts, Kettlebell Snatches) showing the advantage strength plays. At no time during the competition did the weights prove to be an obstacle, so keep up the good work!
Without further adieu, here are some of the highlights:
Avelyne came in 25th out of 58, killed the pull up and clean AMRAPs and had us cheering at the top of our lungs getting through the pullovers in WOD#2. Her tenacity in the week leading up to the invitational was truly an inspiration. She nailed the pullovers just one day before the competition and had the presence of mind to replicate it in the wod! Way to go, Avelyne!
Dustin came in 13th out of 75 in the Intermediate Male Division! He not only [serial] killed the power cleans, coming in 7th, he clocked in 4th overall in WOD#3 (which you all got to experience yesterday). The double unders that were once a goat were flawlessly smooth through WOD#2.
Jake came in 33rd in the Intermediate Division taking advantage of his running background and new found love of kettlebell snatches and flew threw the final workout of the day. His backsquats and deadlifts seemed effortless in the second workout proving it pays to be strong!
Drew finished the day 41st overall in the Intermediate Male Division. His performance in second workout was inspiring as he ripped through the 15 backsquats like they nothing and proceeded to fly through the dreaded pullovers repping them out easily. He made light work of the toes to bar in the third workout and jumped so high in the box jumps in WOD #1 that his head would go out of frame (see Sunday’s post!).
Sean placed 10th out of the 61 advanced male athletes. He came in 4th overall in WOD#2 linking all his pullovers together each set without error. True to form, he slayed the double unders and managed to get through the back squats despite the improv comedy hour (thanks Anna!). He pulled together solid performances in the other workouts to eek out a top 1o finish!
I was fortunate enough to finish 7th out of 16 in the advanced female division. Although I struggled with the pullovers in the second WOD, I surprised even myself getting 7 bar muscle-ups and placing 6th for that event and 4th in the cleans.
Lastly, the Intrepid Cheer Squad came in first overall for their spirit, support, and skill in pushing their way to the front of the group to scream their hearts out to encourage all of the competitors.
Also, big props to our friend Shauna from CrossFit Coronado who took 2nd in the Advanced Females division! Hopefully we can convince her to come up to put on a gymnastics workshop for us in the future!!

I wasn’t sure I was ready for this event after only being in the gym for 3 1/2 months but I was thrilled with the outcome. (Yes, 41st was a win for me)
I think we all have a goal in mind for the next event too!! I had a blast and want to really thank the spectators for this event. It meant a lot to have the LOUDEST, more energetic gym at the event. Thank you guys so much.

wait, why is there no strength training today?
There’s a method to our madness, Drew. Stay tuned for tomorrow’s workout. Also trying to spare the ripped hands (Drew, Jake, and Dustin, and Sean) for another day. You will be subbing ring rows for pull ups today too.

Pooja you are so funny! I can imagine you doing that in your completely quiet bay!
The event was truly inspirational… makes even the beginner athlete want to try it out next time. Can they add a division??
To the fake-lifers out there, the jet blue all you can jet sale is back. Every year I want to get this so bad, but it never works out. Someday…

REALLY proud of Mom & Dad (aka Shuth) and ALL our competitors. Well worth all the sunburns, bee stings and burnt feet the cheering section endured to see you guys perform!
@Wes – Congrats to you as well.

Why can’t we be Rean (pronounced “Ron”)??

@Ruth how about Se-th?
@Anna what are fake-lifers?

@Wes – Great seeing you too! Congrats on your victory. Very impressive. It was particularly fun watching you sprint for the finish on the last WOD with only 1 point separating the top two spots.
@Xuan – they should have a 220+ lb. division, like with Triathlons. Scott and Xuan, The Big Boned Brothers, would DOMINATE!!
@Drew – I tried to get Michelle to smack-talk, but it’s just not in her. My suggestion was to reply to your question about no strength training with “There’s no strength training today so I can kick your ass in the WOD!” – signed “Wodkilla Michelle”. Alas, she just giggled and said no. Ruth, is there a progression for Smack Talk that I can use with Michelle??

@Scott, the beauty of CFI is that EVERYTHING is scalable. In fact, just the purchase of the Wodkilla shirt is the first step to Rx’d smack talking. Just like with Paleo, baby steps is acceptable. Good news is that Drew is adept at smartassery and can draw out Michelle’s smack talk within the week, I’m sure!

Mike- fake lifers are people who don’t have to work like the rest of us… Brian’s friends first coined the term, but I adopted it. When I get every other Friday off from work, it’s my FLF (fake-life Friday), teachers in the summer are living the fake-life, etc.
Someone who can buy a month-long fly anywhere pass and actually make use of it. I’m jealous.

ha ha ha ha we would totally kill the +220 division. I can see it now no pullups, no hand stand push ups, no toe to anything but give me front/back/OH squat and bench/push/strict press throw in some deadlifts, cleans, jerks, heck even sumo deadlift high pull!

You guys might not be happy with a 220+ division. There were 8 guys there who were 220 or greater — 4 in intermediate and 4 in advanced. And yes, they did C2B pullups, pullovers and bar muscle-ups, depending on division.

CFI team: You were incredible!! Your support of each other and stick-to-it-ness is unbelievable–it was so neat to see you all out there yelling your lungs out for the CF Intrepid family. Ruth, Sean, Avelyne, Dustin, Jake, and Drew–you performed phenomenally–especially some of you as your first time!! Thank you for the compliments, Ruth, and I will absolutely come and teach you all some gymnastics–it’s my passion still after so many years:)

Not squashing your dreams, Xuan… I’m saying you can’t use weight as an excuse! Plenty of big guys getting the work done this weekend!
