LL Can't Live Without His Radio

For many of us, music is a major motivator while working out. Our tastes may vary, but almost universally we trainers get complaints if music isn’t playing during class. Likewise, nothing can be worse than a song that has no business in a gym atmosphere. When I used to go to a globo gym, I found it nigh impossible to get psyched up for a heavy set while Mariah Carey is singing a slow song on the musak. Melissa Urban had a great post on her old site about the motivation music can provide:

…when I am training, music is my lyrical air. And that is not an exaggeration – I need music just as much as I need oxygen to breathe. The day I set foot in the gym and realized my iPod battery was dead was the worst training day of my life. I RELY on my music. It’s as integral a part of my training as kettlebells or bumper plates. I have special playlists for all my workouts (heavy power clean music is very different from Filthy Fifty music), and I have special songs within those playlists reserved for CrossFit Emergencies, to be used only in the most dire of circumstances… like round five of Kelly or a 1RM deadlift attempt.

Well luckily, we’re not a globo gym and as such, we have total control about what gets played at the gym. At first we had an iPod playlist, but that got stale since the same 100 songs get old after a while. We’ve tried the streaming apps and those aren’t bad, but can be hit-or-miss. I had the idea to incorporate a bit of everyone’s tastes into an Intrepid Mix to spice things up. Depending on how successful this is, we may allow the playlist to grow organically over time. Obviously we have to have some rules, so here we go (again inspired by Ms. Urban):

  • Post your best/favorite/most guaranteed to work musical tracks (artist and song title) to comments.
  • You only get to post FIVE SONGS, so choose carefully. No changing your mind, one post per person.
  • I’ll download every single one of your tracks and put them in a new Intrepid playlist.
  • If you feel the need to unleash your inner comedian, save it until you’ve first listed your actual five songs.

What’s the Death by 10M consist of? I’ll try to do it before I head back.

The list:
Deftones – Shove it
Eminem – Till I Collapse
Red to Black – Fort Minor
Sugar – System of a Down
4 my People – Missy Elliot

Not sure if Ruth meant by run or row, so she’ll have to chime in. Regardless, it’s like this: 1st minute you do 10m, 2nd minute you do 20m, 3rd minute you do 30m, etc. adding 10m each minute until you cannot complete the full distance within the minute.

Sigh. I guess Marcus isn’t the only one with a penchant for “R” rated songs…

Marcus

@Ruth – and the best thing is that I already have most of these. ;)

Besides, you’re not one to talk with your number one (and highly offensive) song. Sean and I just want to protect the ears of our neighbors!

Is 2 Live Crew gym appropriate?

In my class, it’s mandatory. Mom may disagree during her classes.

I could probably list a dozen AC/DC and Linkin Park songs. And I’d probably give you 5 different songs every time you ask, but here’s my 5….

AC DC – Thunderstruck
Kanye West – Stronger
White Strips – Seven Nation Army
Jay-Z – 99 Problems
LL Cool J – Mama Said Knock You Out!

Can’t believe nobody mentioned the last one (unless I missed it). That’s THE classic workout song of my lifetime.
