Embracing the Suck

Intrepid (ɪnˈtrɛpɪd): audacious: invulnerable to fear or intimidation, resolutely fearless.
Your heart is pounding, you can’t feel your legs (or worse, you can), your body is screaming for just a little break, your demons are taunting you and telling you to bitch out. Quit. Stop.
For some of us, this anxiety starts the minute we see the WOD posted, the moment we walk into the gym, or at the sound of the countdown. For most of us, this is the only time we encounter a fight or flight response unless your job or hobbies are centered around danger. The beauty of it is that when we push through this fear and anxiety, we choose to fight. We condition our bodies to deal with stress (both physical and mental). We reinforce the confidence in ourselves to accomplish what we thought was impossible.
When tossing around names for the gym, we searched for a word that would define us as a gym; a word that embodies the spirit of pushing the envelope, redefining our boundaries, and surpassing our every own expectations on a daily basis. When Sean brought up “Intrepid,” it stuck immediately.
Every time you step under that barbell for a PR or await that impending countdown for the wod, embrace the anxiety, the fear of the unknown. Recognize it as a chance to prove it to yourself that you can overcome any challenge placed before you, either in life or in the gym. When it’s over, embrace the satisfaction you deserve for accepting the gauntlet.
Then reach back and bitch slap the demons that held you back.
Just taking a quick poll to see who is going to be in town Labor Day on Monday. We’ll either have class at 10am or at 5pm. Vote in comments. (Note: if you vote, I expect you show up to the class you voted for…or suffer the consequences). We’re also wrapping up August’s challenge and want to see who managed to get through the month with the least amount of burpees (paid). Post to comments as well.

I’ll be in town. 10 or 5 works for me. I’ll be there either way cause I’m an intrepid.
btw is that a typo? shouldn’t it be 21 pullups? just want to make sure we show Helen respect and not cheat her :p

great post to read after today’s wod. i didn’t see the workout posted online before i went to the gym this morning, but i went anyway, a little apprehensive. and as soon as sean wrote “running drills” for the warm-up on the board, my stomach was in knots. but you know what? i did it. i bitch-slapped those demons, and i finished my first ever wod as rx’d!!! although i may have had an unfair advantage… jay-z TOTALLY helped me through it.
embrace the suck!

400m walking lunges was the first wod that nearly made me fall over (as those that were there can attest to at the end). Knowing that I finished was very empowering. I owe big ups to Marcus and Brian for pushing me through.
Labor day will be a gametime decision for me so I have no vote.

I quit the challenge. More power to you Marcus, that S is hard.
Approprirately titled post because I hate Helen. But, I am guaranteeing I shave over 2 minutes off my previous time…
10AM for Labor Day so I can drink the rest of the day but I am still not 100% on if we will be here.

I think Drew nailed it….10AM for Labor Day so I can drink the rest of the day.
I was reading Ruth’s post and all I could think was….
Ruth: Fear does not exist in this dojo, does it?
CFI: No, Sensei!
Ruth: Pain does not exist in this dojo, does it?
CFI: No, Sensei!
Ruth: Defeat does not exist in this dojo, does it?
CFI: No, Sensei!
Wax on… wax off!!

Ohh Helen, we meet again. that snatch made me wimper last time we met. i hope i can maintain composure this time around.
as for a labor day class, i really wanna vote for 10, but i may sleep through it considering i am going out the night before. so i am in limbo.
also i wanna have you all over for swimming if the weather stays nice … after friday or saturday’s WOD? Or after Labor day’s WOD?
i’m open, but we can wait til everyone (marcus, anna?) are in town.
yay shwimmin!

THANKS RUTH!! OK, see here’s the thing. I swore it was 21/21 because, I don’t know why. The running drills made me delirious. So, it the runnings’ fault, I can’t embrace that. =) For the record, this morning totally did happen. And my shoulders hate me.
I vote for 10 am.
I paid in . . Um . . a lot of burpees. =( I thought I had this in the bag. DAG-NABBIT! I don’t think I won. But I’m OK with that because it was a great learning experience in cooking and physically.

Nick and I will be in San Diego for labor day weekend, so no Crossfit for us Saturday or Monday. Maybe we can do laps in the rooftop pool at the hotel, I do love swimming!!!
I’m not going to make it to Crossfit tonight, but I’ll be prepared to take on Helen on Thursday!
