Yesterday Brian competed in his first CrossFit competition, the Next Level Invitational. It was so much fun to watch Brian compete and we were all so proud of him. This competition definitely tested Brian more than he planned….

Saturday morning was an unusual Orange County morning, it started with a downpour and soon turned into a thunderstorm and 1/4″ sized hail. This delayed the competition and made the planned workouts very difficult to do in the slippery conditions. Also, the wallballs were left out in the rain, and no one was too excited to pick up a water- logged wall ball. So the NLI team decided to change the workout programming to better suit the conditions and would allow the athletes to complete them rain or shine. Instead of the planned workouts we all tried out this week, they switched to bodyweight-style workouts:

Workout 1: AMRAP 10 – 15 burpees, 30 dubs

Workout 2: AMRAP 7 – 10 pull ups, 20 air squats

Floater: AMRAP 4: 185# deadlift

A lot of the competitors started complaining about the last minute change, but Brian rolled with the punches and put all he had into the new workouts. We watched and cheered while Brian grunted out countless burpees, strung many of his dubs together, pulled a whopping 87 dead lifts and completed nearly 8 rounds in only 7 min. Brian exemplified a true CrossFit athlete, dealing with the unknown and unknowable.

Personally, I had a ton of fun sitting on the sidelines for a change, cheering on a great friend. One thing that definitely stuck out was our cheer squad to athlete ratio. Brian stepped up to represent Intrepid, and 9 Intrepids showed up to cheer him on. It takes guts to put yourself out there and compete, but you will always have the family behind you!

Great job today, Brian! We are all so proud of you!

Also, big shout out to Alia who volunteered to judge at NLI!

Way to commit to challenge yourself Brian. Participating was an intention for me and not a commitment. Next year?!

Thanks everyone! I never would’ve thought of putting myself out there if I didn’t have the support of our gym. It really made me proud to represent the family. Thanks for the awesome post holley… I can assure you the workouts were not nearly as awesome as you portrayed them to be. I made Ruth promise not to program them.

Congratulations Brian! Your individual effort and Holley’s report of the support you received,on this weekend in particular, left me thinking about “e pluribus unum”—- out of many, one. Crossfit at its best.
