A simple question to reflect upon, “Why do you CrossFit?”  Is it because of the constantly varied, functional movements at high intensities?  Is it the competitive drive to finish a WOD?  Is it because you want to live a long,  healthy life?  Is it because you want to be a role model for your kids?  I was asked this question recently and in the midst of answering, I realized my reasons for doing CrossFit have changed.

When I first started CrossFit, I thought it was the coolest thing to throw heavy weight around.  I did it because there was something different every day and I looked forward to Wednesdays which was our strength day back at my old gym.  I did it because it made me feel stronger during a time when I was mentally weak.  If I could make it through the tough WODs, I could get through anything.

Now, I still enjoy the feeling of being able to lift heavy and gutting through the tough WODs but I also look to my future.  I CrossFit because I want to be a strong role model for my nephews and any future babies.  I CrossFit because I want to be able to live a long, healthy life without having to become a pill popper in my old age.  I refuse to let my family health history define me.  I CrossFit because I want to.

So, I pose the same question to you, my fellow Intrepids, why do you CrossFit?  Has your reason for doing CrossFit changed since you first started?  What keeps you coming back for more?  There are no right or wrong answers here but I would like to hear from you.  Post your answers to comments.

**On another note, the Summer Shakedown Team Competition is Saturday, August 31 at Red Wolf CrossFit in Huntington Beach.  The day of the competition, athletes will complete 3 games level WODs.  Registration opens in 8 days from today on June 29 at 12noon.  There is a limit of 4 teams per gym.  We’d like to get the teams finalized, so if you are interested in competing, please let one of the coaches know ASAP!**

And finally, we’d like to wish Fady (camera shy!) a very happy birthday!  Fady is one of our newer Intrepids and has been spotted in our 5, 6, and 7PM classes.  Have a wonderful birthday celebration!

I started to keep my mind occupied while caring for my father and doing something for me. I keep coming to make 48 seem like 28 and to keep young for my 11, 8, and 6 year old kids….two of which crossfit with me!

Happy Birthday Fady!

Why do I crossfit? To live a healthy life every day and to live long. And to be able to outrun my now 4 year old for years to come. i ENJOY crossfit because of the fantastic caring instructors and the amazing camaraderie of the others — whether you’re lifting 50 or 250 pounds, they are always offering encouragement.

I crossfit because it keeps me going! Always challenging and fun. Everyday I realize why I work out when I’m doing something and I think to myself wow “thank god I workout bc if i didn’t I would not be able to do some of the things I do”!! Especially when it comes to keeping up with my 4 and 7 year old.Now that I am 43 I feel better than I did in my 30′s bc I CrossFit. I have learned so much about my body, mind and how foods affect me as a whole! And I love encouraging my kids to live a healthy lifestyle with being active and eating right!

Happy Birthday Fady!

Before Intrepid, I used to CrossFit to beat numbers on a board. Then I found a fun family and it changed to friendly competition. Then I realized that my strength is in sharing knowledge, inspiring others and being able to do things for my family and friends. (And I can play Dance Central on my XBOX Kinect for way longer now)

Crossfit Kids! Awesome!

I used to play competitive club ultimate frisbee. I started crossfit to because it was a better way to train for the rigors of a ultimate tourney. A tourney usually consisted of two days 7 games to 15, along with a time cap of 1 hour 30 minutes. I played a majority of defensive points – if you’re playing well – those points can take a while and if you’re lucky enough to score – you get to play another point! It worked well – in 2011 – I transitioned to Masters Ultimate. We had short numbers, but it to the finals, where we as a team ran out of gas and lost.

Since then I’ve become a father at 36 – it is now all about being in shape to keep up with them as they get older and to be around to hopefully be able to be an active grand parent!

PS Crossfit is like gym class for adults!

Happy Birthday Fady!!!

To be honest, when I first heard about CrossFit, I had no interest in doing it. However, after a few weeks of badgering from this cute guy at work ;) ;) I decided to give it a try. I ended up liking it because it was a new challenge each day, it was competitive, and I was seeing results. After finding Intrepid it became so much more. It was about community, which then became more like family. Since then it has transformed me, made me a lot stronger and healthier and I’ve watched it do the same for so many of my new CF friends. I hope to keep up with it for a long time and I look forward to seeing my future children start one day. I want them to never get into the unhealthy/non-functional bad habits that I now have to break.

Yup! Addicted!

Happy birthday Fady!

I started crossfit because years of spinning classes and repetitive weightlifting routines were not working.

More importantly the reason I stayed is because it is a network of likeminded people… and for this homesick transplant, I feel surrounded by family.

I also still feel like a kid coming to gym class. Every class is exciting because its always something new.
