Last night the 2nd open workout (aka 12.2) was revealed. This one offers a substantial leap in difficulty over the very approachable 7 minutes of burpees. Whereas 12.1 set a baseline for conditioning, this time around the stakes are raised as strength and technique are tested….along with again checking one’s conditioning.

For men/women:

Proceed through the sequence below completing as many reps as possible in 10 minutes of:
75/45 pound Snatch, 30 reps
135/75 pound Snatch, 30 reps
165/100 pound Snatch, 30 reps
210/120 pound Snatch, as many reps as possible

We know we have several of you that have entered the Open and you may be daunted at the above weights. As your trainers, your safety is our primary concern. If you have never previously snatched the 2nd weight (135/75) ever in your life, we will not be encouraging you to perform this as “Rx”. I will gladly take the role of “Brutus” and deliver this potentially bad news — for your own good.

The other potential downside, even with scaling, is that the sheer number of reps in this workout can really ingrain some terrible movement patterns if you haven’t gotten a handle on performing the snatch.  For that reason, we will have alternative programming on Friday that we will be having people do rather than even a scaled version of 12.2. Even if you were doing the workout with an empty bar, 90+ repetitions of crappy form is going to build muscle memory — of crappy form — and that is not something we pride ourselves on at Intrepid.

well said Brutus, I see so many people in gyms across the world set on doing this rx’d just to say they did regardless of form.

I wish our crossfit in Indiana had this philosophy! Thankfully, I had enough teaching from you guys that I did not cave into peer pressure to try to do 135#, when I have never ever done that much weight! I had enough sense that 1.)I didn’t want to get injured and 2.) knew that it would be very crappy form!
Thank you for this encouragement! Miss ya guys!
