In my line of work, the phrase “Airport Appreciation” means spending lots of downtime at an airport, whether it’s a scheduled 3 hour break or a delay because of a late inbound aircraft or weather issues. Any way you look at it, it sucks. It shortens your other connection times, delays your day and puts you in a bad mood. But what if you could release some endorphins during your downtime?

As Americans continue to focus on living a healthier lifestyle, major airports across the nation have seem to caught on to the growing trend. They’re offering more healthful food options and even creating pathways for travelers to exercise their legs. Some even have fully equipped gyms to get a workout in. Yep! Gyms at an airport near you! Now, don’t expect these gyms to be CrossFit WOD ready with plyo boxes and medballs but most will have dumbbells and some type of a pull up rack as well as other free weights. Airportgyms.com has a listing of US and Canadian gyms and for you global flyers, Men’s Health has an article on the Best Airport Gyms around the world. Be aware that some of the gyms listed aren’t located at the airport but are a short cab/shuttle ride away. Here are some that I’m aware of that are located within the airport:

- Chicago O’Hare, the Hilton Hotel gym is connected to three terminals via underground walkways. $15 for a day pass

- San Francisco International has a yoga room inside Terminal 2 just past security and it’s FREE

- Miami International Airport has free weights, a pool, and a walking/running track in Terminal E

- Vancouver International Airport, at the Fairmont Vancouver Airport Hotel (located at the end of the International Terminal also has yoga, a lap pool, and spa. $15USD for a day pass

With summer fast approaching, we know many of you will be out and about traveling the globe. Hopefully, you won’t run into any delays while plane hopping but if you do, know that you have some options to relieve that stress. And if you aren’t in an airport that has a gym within or nearby, you can always take a lacrosse ball with you and work on loosening up those knotty areas.

We also want to wish Danny G., a noontime regular, a very Happy Birthday! We may not have you on camera yet, but we will!
