By now, I’m sure you have heard about the growing debate over labeling GMO products/produce. There have been marches on State Capitols demanding our government require labeling for genetically engineered produce. Celebrities are becoming advocates to promote awareness. Social media is abuzz with various groups organizing rally events to inform consumers of their Right to Know. Whole Foods has even developed a policy that would require labeling of all products they carry to identify GMOs…and should be in place by 2018. Yes, in 5 years from now, that will benefit us. But what about now? Is there any company out there that’s willing to make changes now to benefit the consumer? Indeed, there is!

Chipotle is the first and only major US food supplier to voluntarily label GMOs used in their food. If you go to their Ingredients Statement page, it lists all of their food items and the ingredients they use in each. Noticeably, most of what they cook with is soybean oil (bad) BUT bravo to Chipotle for 1) labeling the GMO and 2) attempting to make changes. From their website:

“Our goal is to eliminate GMOs from Chipotle’s ingredients, and we’re working hard to meet this challenge. For example, we recently switched our fryers from soybean oil to sunflower oil. Soybean oil is almost always made from genetically modified soybeans, while there is no commercially available GMO sunflower oil.”

Chipotle has always been a front runner in the way they source their ingredients, from naturally raised animals, to using local, organic ingredients and now by labeling and eventually eliminating the GMOs used in their products. Here’s to hoping that more companies follow suit!
