Now open in Terminal 8!

I admit, I’m not always prepared when it comes to my meals especially when packing for my work week.  Some mornings I would rather get in an extra 15 minutes of sleep rather than cook up an egg scramble and some times there are flight delays which make my day longer.  Such was the case this past week when my flight was delayed first thing in the morning. Lucky for me, the airport folks just unveiled a new, yet familiar, restaurant in Terminal 8 (United Airlines) – Marmalade Cafe.  Yep, the same Marmalade Cafe that can be found in the El Segundo Plaza.  While the LAX menu is a bit abbreviated from its El Segundo location, they still offer food made to order (Gilson’s Scramble is on the menu) as well as items prepped and ready to go for your flight.  Be aware, just as with anything you purchase at the airport, prices have been marked up.

In the clear container: sweet potato, white snow peach and ancho chili, and kale, mushrooms and kumquat vinaigrette. Moroccan chicken in the cup.

Over in Terminal 5 (Delta/Alaska Airlines/United*), the better food option is Lemonade, a cute cafeteria-style cafe.  From their website:

“Lemonade captures the L.A. spirit of adventure about food, an appreciation of the freshest seasonal ingredients, and a desire to reinterpret familiar dishes with unexpected twists. Our food is for people who care about what they eat. It’s clean, healthy, and inventive cuisine.”

Their setup starts off in the Marketplace which includes salads, sides and lots of veggie options.  Then you continue on to their Land & Sea – fish and chicken options, followed by their Market Tossed Salads.  My favorite area is the Braises which include BBQ brisket, lemongrass chicken and Jamaican jerk chicken to name a few.

What’s really great about this place is 1) you can sample just about anything they offer and 2) if you end up liking a bunch of samples and still can’t decide, you can split your portions in half.  Really great for the indecisive-I- want-it-all-types.  What’s really bad about this place is the tempting array of sweets they have placed strategically next to the cash register – STAY AWAY!

So if you find yourself in the south side terminals of LAX (Terminals 5-8)** and didn’t bring food with you, know that you have a couple healthier, fresher options to choose from now.  You don’t have to lower your standards to McDonalds, Carl’s Jr or the questionable stuff on display in the refrigerator cases.

If you don’t frequent LAX but would still like to try Lemonade, they recently opened up a new location at The Metlox Center in Manhattan Beach.

* You can access Terminal 5 from Terminals 6, 7 and 8 via the underground walkway located by Gate 65.

** For those of you that travel through Terminals 1-4, i’m not aware of the newer food options (sorry!) but if you do, post to comments.

Great insights! I travel through Virgin all the time because I’m high maintenance like that. So I know in Term 3 there is a Starbucks (no heavy whipping cream every time I’ve gone though), Gladstones fish and the Virign lounge offers up some pretty healthy and small tapas sized plates. I spent 4 hours in there over Christmas vacation. The Virgin Lounge is $40 extra and is open to all levels of travelers. It does get packed as it is small but offers all you can eat food and drinks; and not the small joke beer glasses. Full on glasses the size of a toddler . . uh not that I would know. I agree that Lemonade’s kale salad is so freaking good!

Awesome post Avelyne. We always struggle find decent food especially at airports. Thanks for the heads up.

Great post!!!

I was able to stay Paleo at Lemonade at LAX. Items were a la carte and simplistic. Fresh hard boiled eggs, fresh berries and smoked salmon were all great.
