The friendly folks at Beastskills.com have put together a helpful progression to work towards the front lever.  The goal is to get your body parallel to the floor and hold it for at least a few seconds.  The front lever can be done on rings or a bar, but rings tend to be easier to work with while learning the skill. 

Keep these things in mind throughout each progression movement:

  1. The palms of the hands face downwards and keep pressing down towards the floor.
  2. Keep arms close by your side about shoulder width apart
  3. Keep your midsection, glutes, and legs, extremely tight to prevent your hips from sagging into this incorrect position

Please refer to the link above for more detail but the progression follows this order in level of difficulty:

Tuck

Keep the legs tucked and work towards getting the line between the hips and shoulders parallel to the ground.  If you find you have difficulty holding this position then work on doing negatives or hang inverted and slowly lower yourself down controlling your speed going as slow as possible.

Advanced Tuck

Keep the knees bent but do not keep them as close as you did in the tuck position.  This will increase the lever arm but no so much you shouldn’t be able to hold it, assuming you’ve mastered the tuck position.

Single Leg Lever

This position is great for getting the feel of the front lever.  When multiple repititions of this movement be sure to switch the leg you hold out.

Straddle Front Lever

Depending on your flexibility this position may be easier or harder than the single leg front lever.  The wider you can go in the straddle position the easier the position will be.  As you become comfortable in the position gradually bring your legs closer and closer together to increase the difficulty until you find yourself in the…
