Ahh, good ol’ Dallas and Melissa over at Whole9. Yes, the same ones who brought us the Whole30 that we turned into the May challenge. They just did a post on a popular subject in the paleo sphere — bacon. (Read: The Bacon Bummer at Whole9Life.com)

Now while they don’t come out and say to never eat bacon, they state their case as to why they don’t recommend it as a food choice. They also want those who choose to eat bacon to make an informed choice and know what the potential downsides may be.

In previous posts, I’ve made no secret that I’m a fan of bacon. But to be clear, I should let it be known that my love for bacon is somewhat tongue-in-cheek. I don’t eat it every day and certainly not at every meal. For your own sake, I hope you don’t use bacon as a protein source. Personally, I use it as a side or fat source, not as the main part of my meal — I’d advise you all to do the same. I have been operating under the assumption that people would use common sense and eat bacon sparingly, not by the pound. However, since common sense ain’t so common, I do think the Whole9 post is a great thing. Take a look over it and be more informed about your choice to partake of the pork.

Oh and before anybody thinks they found a great solution by using the garbage known as turkey bacon, they had a response in their comments section: “Turkey bacon is not food. Enough said.”

I’ll leave you with a funny clip from one of my role models, Ron Swanson:

Eat bacon every day? Don’t be silly Marcus! I’m sure we don’t eat bacon more than 6 times a week…. if you don’t count Sundays… or bacon on my burger… or bacon wrapped filet.

Buy bacon by the pound??? Another ridiculous claim! TJs sells bacon in 8 oz packages. You know that!! :)

Methinks Michelle and Scotty won’t like this post.

Marcus, when people talk about turkey bacon I quote you every time, “What part of the turkey does bacon come from?” The response is either laughter or bewilderment!!

So what you’re saying is 4 slices of bacon for breakfast is not a good start to my day??? This is a very, very sad day for me.

Wow, those Whole 9 people are intense. What do we use instead of Olive Oil Dr. M?

@Drew — they responded to the olive oil question by saying “Occasionally, we do cook with olive oil. (Gasp! Yep, we like the flavor too.) What we outline in our Whole30 Success Guide is to cook at low temperature for brief periods of time, so as to limit your risk of oxidation. (A cast iron pan is best, as you can control the heat far more than you can with a flimsy Teflon-coated pan.)

You can also use the “wet saute” method – cover the bottom of your pan with water, heat to just about boiling, and toss in your veggies. Towards the end, throw in your olive oil and mix to coat. This method shortens the time the oil is in contact with the hot pan.” and

“Saturated fats are the most stable (and least likely to oxidize) when exposed to air and heat. Things like grass-finished, organic tallow; pastured, organic, clarified butter (www.whole9life.com/2010/11/butter) and unrefined coconut oil are the best cooking fats in our book.”

Never invite these people to a party! Good food for thought, but the PUFA content of bacon is still low and Dallas and Melissa are food Nazis. I might cut bacon back from 7 days a week to 5…

Kat is right! I don’t like this post one bit. I am so sad right now. I’m going to bake myself a cookie monster tonight to make myself feel better =)

@ Michelle – I’m with you on sadness… Can I come over and join in the cookie binge to attempt to mend our broken hearts?

just kidding Marcus… :D

Wait, I profess my new found love for bacon and now I am supposed to break up even though bacon makes me very happy? What if I only see bacon for breakfast? This is very unsettling. Back to the drawing board.

Wow, I was going to post about this, but thanks to Marcus I don’t have to be the bad guy this time!!

Michelle and Holley I’m only a block away so if I smell Cookie Monster’s presence I’ll be there to break up the party.

On another note, Pooja just posted this on my fb wall: “i ate a muffin today, and i feel icky :( no need for burpee penalty, this feeling is more than enough punishment!”

Under the bus you go!!!

bacon = tasty

tasty = happy

Man’s eternal question of life: what makes one happy?

Man’s answer to life’s eternal question: bacon.

Just when i start to think I could do this whole paleo thing. you take away one of the best parts of it. i guess its back to frozen burritos and zeppys this weekend

First off, I was eating bacon like it was going out of style during the whole30 and I’ve never felt better…or stronger!

Second off, Dallas and Melissa are from Salt Lake City….I guess if your local cuisine includes item such fried mayonaisse balls, beer without alchohol, and a steady helping of rocky mountain oysters than maybe, just maybe you cut back on your bacon intake.

I’m sticking with the family size bacon boxes once a week….whos with me????

Oh boy you guys are sure in an uproar.

@Troy, I’ll give you a pass on bacon moderation if you actually go paleo. Calling your bluff, dude.

@Tyler, burpee penalties for mutiny.

Next week Marcus will post how sex makes us weak in the knees and abstinence is the only way to truly maximize athletic output (old boxing philosophy).

In July he’ll tell us the only way to true enlightenment is to sacrifice all earthly possessions and join the Buddhist monks in the Himalayas.

BACON POWER!!!
