Alice soaking up some sun during her deadlifts

About a month ago I posted What You Need to Know about SPF, and today’s post is a follow up to that.  Mark’s Daily Apple posted a couple of weeks ago a post entitled “7 Home Remedies to Relieve a Sunburn.”  If you find yourself burnt and needing some relief try some of Mark’s suggestions:

  • Aloe Vera – research has not shown a direct linkage to preventing nor healing sunburns but has been shown to soothe the pain associated with sunburn (my favorite)
  • Kukui Nut Oil – the oil’s efficacy has never been “proven” but 1,500 years of use may boost this option beyond mere anecdotal (Ruth’s favorite)
  • Topical Vitamin E – some research showed that applying vitamin E after burn exposure helped reduce the sun damage
  • Topical Black Tea – polyphenols in tea leaves have been shown to improve skin’s resistance to UV radiation when ingested, but a topical application may also soothe and improve the healing of sunburn
  • Milk – Some dermatologists are proponents of applying cool milk to the sunburn saying that it creates a protein film that helps ease the sunburn discomfort
  • Vinegar – although not much research has been done on this option, using one part vinegar to one part water in a spray bottle helps lessen the discomfort of sunburn when sprayed on the affected areas
  • Coconut Oil – Along the same lines as vinegar, not much formal research has been done to test coconut oil effectiveness at soothing or healing sunburn.  Much of the anecdotal evidence lies in the number of people who swear by it.

Check out the entire article here on Mark’s Daily Apple for more details and the links to the studies (if applicable) for the options above.  Can you vouch for any of the remedies listed above, or do you have your own to share?  Post to comments.

WOD 08.06.11

In Teams of 4:
“Relay Race”
Hill Run
Prowler Ferry (only 2 objects per trip)

then transition inside gym and perform:

8 Rope Climbs
20 Burpees
60 Double Unders
25 Wall Balls

Prowler Ferry (only 2 objects per trip)
Hill Run

Team runs hill together.
Each team member takes one empty prowler 40m and loads two objects (i.e. plate and slamball) and pushes it back to unload. Meanwhile, one other person on the team must be using the sledgehammer.
Once the team gets inside, each member will perform each of the movements (one person climbs rope while another does burpees, etc) and rotates until every member completes each movement.
Return outside and finish with another prowler ferry, sledgehammer, and hill run.
