Congrats to Kyle for getting his first muscle up yesterday! And Holley for her first strict one!

This concludes a week of our purposefully scrambled schedule, where the 5pm class was the first to complete the WOD and AM would complete it the day after. The main reason we tried this experiment was because we often saw the evening classes basing their weights and projected WOD times off of their “rabbits” in the morning classes. Morning class set the bar and their results often helped evening classes “game” their attack.

There’s absolutely nothing wrong with having a rabbit to chase. Many people run better with a pacer ahead of them. All of us push harder working out with peers in classes. It’s the proverbial carrot dangling in front of you.

The problem lies in always setting yourself up to just catch the carrot, or worse, staying behind the pacer. Sometimes, you can build your own glass ceiling. Have you ever found yourself thinking:

  • If Athlete A only completed 5 rounds, then I probably will only get 4.
  • If Athlete B used 83# for her cleans, I should use 63#.
  • If Athlete C did 20 tabata squats, I just need to do 21!
Don’t get me wrong, there’s merit to picking an athlete as your rabbit and using his performance as motivation. Just don’t get complacent basing your performance off of someone else. Set the bar for someone else to try to beat. Be the rabbit.

Dammit, I wish I was there to see the MU’s! (I am embracing the Ruth Yu Acronym School of Thought – RYAST).
