Since we’re all caravaning to cheer on our Intrepid athletes at the Shakedown Series, the gym will be closed today!

I only get to say this for about 2 weeks per year: I am dating an older woman! I had to get that out, sorry. So another year has passed and Holley’s dominance over me is another year strong. I don’t know if everyone is aware of this, but we work together and word has gotten out that she destroys me in workouts. Do you know how demoralizing that is?   “Hey Nick, I was going to have you move this 300 lb. crate across the floor to shipping/receiving, but I just had Holley do it since she is quicker.” Great.

It took some time, but I have come to terms with her incredible athleticism and strength and accepted that I can beat her in about two things: drinking wine and getting up earlier. All joking aside, Holley has become a force in the gym. From her innocent million dubs/minute in our first workout over a year and half ago, to her recent stellar performances in NLI, she gives focus a new name. Holley is not only a great athlete, but she is only one of two people at SpaceX in her specialty, so she performs in the same mental focused state all day before coming to the gym and taking away my manhood in a 10 min AMRAP every night. The girl has skill.

As a tribute to another year in the gym, I thought I would recap what she said last year and see where she stands in her “goats and goals”. Last year at this time she wanted to “do handstand push-ups and ring dips assistance free and total over 100 kg in her Olympic total”. Well, she knocks out 5 – 10 HSPUs and 10 ring dips unbroken, no assistance of course, and has a 110 kg Olympic total. And oh yeah, she is a certified Level 1 trainer. I would call that a good year (okay, maybe a great year).

Through extreme dedication Holley applies her Popeye faced focus (see pictures above) to continuously improve herself. She is definitely a role model for me and a lot of others in the gym. Although an embarrassment, her beating me pushes my mental focus too.
Let me end by quoting her from 2010: “What motivated me to do CF?  Trying to show Nick CrossFit was dumb and prove him wrong.”

Looks like I won that argument☺. Nick 1, Holley 0.

Happy birthday to the hardest working person I know and to my best friend! Love you!

Who knew Nick could be so nice??

Happy Birthday large lantern!! You always talk about finding things outside the box to motivate you (competitions, videos, etc), I’m thankful that my “push” comes 5 nights a week in the form of an exotic redhead! Thanks for sacrificing your leg so that I wouldn’t hit the ground in the shopping cart, and being such a great friend!!

“Thorisdottir Lite” has been quietly crushing workouts for some time now, never saying a word except “DONE” which is usually 2-3 minutes before me. In fact she’s just quiet period. When her and Nick started I struggled to get 3 words out of her. And when I DID I could barely hear them … however likely due to the fact that im an old-ass man and listened to too much Metal cranked up to 11. I mean the rope from her double- unders made more noise than she did in a week. But for all that she doesn’t say, the expressions on her face say a mouthful. You can just see the stubborn determination and competitive drive this girl has. Tenacious in workouts and humble in her achievements, she is an incredible athlete and even better friend. You have become such a great friend to me and anna and were incredibly lucky for that. I’m really proud to have competed alongside you on your birthday today. Happy Birthday Holley.. Main Course!

It is nice to see Holley’s friends write so eloquently about her quiet determination. Her mother and I have seen the same all her life. Some things don’t change! I am very thankful for her good friends. Happy Birthday Holley!

Thanks for the sweet post, babe! Love you!

Thanks for the birthday wishes everyone! It was so awesome to have so many Intrepids out at the competition. It definitely makes the day that much more fun and it’s great to have the loudest cheering section in the house! I’m so lucky to have gotten to spend my birthday with so many great friends.

@Anna and Steph – It’s funny to me to hear you guys say I push you…I was so impressed and intimidated by the two of you when I started. I always look forward to coming in and getting my butt kicked by you guys.

@B – Haha, I only wish I beat you by 2-3 minutes everyday. May the competition continue, Women in power! ;)
