Much more sinister and less kinky than it sounds, olive oil adulteration has been more rampant than one might think. When you pick up a bottle of Extra Virgin Olive Oil (EVOO) at your local grocery, you may be getting way more than you bargained for. In this Natural News article, olive oil expert Tom Mueller explains there are impostors with toxic additives being passed off as pure EVOO.

Simply put, some of the EVOO out there has been ‘watered down’ with toxic rapeseed oils such as canola, soybean, and other low-grade oils. Good EVOO has to be stored in dark colored glass bottles to protect its antioxidants, its flavor, and its natural green (not yellow) color) from the sun’s UV rays. So, the easy thing is to avoid all EVOO stored in plastic and/or clear bottles.

UC Davis recently tested a variety of popular brands and of those brands tested, the following failed to meet extra-virgin olive oil standards:

• Bertolli
• Carapelli
• Filippo Berio
• Mazzola
• Mezzetta
• Newman’s Own
• Pompeian
• Rachel Ray
• Safeway
• Star
• Whole Foods

The following brands were found to meet extra-virgin olive oil standards as part of the study:

• Corto Olive
• California Olive Ranch
• Kirkland Organic
• Lucero (Ascolano)
• McEvoy Ranch Organic

As a rule of thumb, the article also suggests that you buy California based olive oils as well as any imported ones certified by the International Olive Council (IOC).
